01
Record the current setup
List your domains, hosting provider, website software, databases and email provider. Identify who owns the domain and who can approve changes. Share the required access through the agreed secure process, rather than putting passwords in an email brief.
02
Prepare a recovery point
Confirm a recent backup of the website and database, and agree how restoration will be checked. Keep the original hosting available until the migrated site has been reviewed. Agree a change window and a rollback decision with the team.
03
Check the migrated website before switching
Review pages, forms, images, logins and any agreed integrations on the new setup. Check email records separately so a website move does not accidentally change where business mail is delivered.
04
Validate after the DNS change
After the agreed DNS switch, check the public website, HTTPS and business email. Record any errors with the URL, time and steps to reproduce. DNS updates can reach different networks at different times; the team should confirm the migration before the original hosting is retired.
Your next-step checklist
- Domain owner and approvals identified
- Website and database backup checked
- Email and DNS records recorded
- Acceptance checks and rollback plan agreed
